#10 – Adam Sandler ($340 Million)
While Adam Sandler has received criticism for both the roles he has taken and the movies he has produced lately, there’s no denying that he has made some smart financial moves. Forbes listed Sandler as “The Most Overpaid Actor of 2013” due to the massive amount of money he receives for each film. For instance, Sandler earned more than $60 million for the movie “Anger Management”.
Sandler has one of the best agents in Hollywood who has been able to negotiate a $25 million flat rate for films, as well as 25 percent of what the film makes at the box office. If one of his movies bombs, he still gets at least $25 million and much, much more. Sandler has been doing this for years, netting him well over $300 million. This also makes Sandler the richest alumni of “Saturday Night Live” in front of Will Ferrell and Eddie Murphy.
#9 – Clint Eastwood ($370 Million)
Almost 50 years ago, Eastwood was being paid more than $5 million (in 2015 currency) per movie. His acting career has progressively slowed as he has turned his attention to working behind the camera. Eastwood most recently directed, “American Sniper,” which has already made more than $100 million in its opening weekend. This likely means that Eastwood’s already high net worth is going to jump up a few spots.
#8 – Bill Cosby ($380 Million)
Cosby had a decently successful career as a standup comedian, but it was when “The Cosby Show” became a hit on TV that everyone wanted to sign him for endorsement deals. The Jell-O Pudding commercials in the 1980’s were a big hit and eventually his sitcom made it to syndication. People still wanted to watch it after the show ended, resulting in Cosby receiving millions from the deal.
#7 – Tom Hanks ($390 Million)
The films that Hanks has appeared in have gathered an estimated $8.3 billion through the box office worldwide. The movie that has paid Hanks the most in residuals is “Forrest Gump”. “Forrest Gump” was a modest success at the box office, but its repeated plays on television have allowed Hanks to make a total of $70 million from the film. He made another $50 million from “Angels and Demons”. With a huge library of films that have paid him well, Hanks sits at just under $400 million.
#6 – Tom Cruise ($400 Million)
Movies like “Top Gun”, “Cocktail” and “Rain Man” were all successes, and that’s where Cruise started to earn the big bucks. $227 million of his net worth came from starring in the four “Mission Impossible” movies. Even “Rock of Ages”, a movie that nobody saw, paid him $5 million to play a singer in what was basically a cameo role. The role obviously wasn’t as well liked as his performance in “Tropic Thunder”.
#5 – Tyler Perry ($450 Million)
More than half of Tyler Perry’s fortune originates from two different things. $75 million was earned from the sales of tickets to his plays, from which the movies are based. The second is a $200 million contract with the network TBS to produce and write 100 episodes of his show “House of Payne”. It’s been a great 10 years for Perry, who has quickly shot up the list despite not being an A-lister in the 1980’s like most of the men featured here.
#4 – Johnny Depp ($450 Million)
A lot of people know that Depp and director Tim Burton are very good friends and they must be, if Depp was offered $50 million to appear in “Alice in Wonderland”. He got another $55 million from Disney to once again play Jack Sparrow in “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides”. Even voice acting has been profitable for Depp, who received $7.5 million for “Rango”. Depp’s movies have been admittedly hit or miss as of late, but as long as the millions keep coming in, he’s happy.
#3 – Jack Nicholson ($480 Million)
The Joker is one of the most iconic villains in comic book history, and for playing him onscreen, Nicholson received a total of $96 million. After that cemented his legacy as an A-lister for life, his salary increased again, including a $20 million payday for “Anger Management”. Now, Nicholson has been investing in art, including a $100 million collection that includes work from Andy Warhol and Pablo Picasso. If you miss seeing Nicholson on TV, just turn on a Lakers game, you’re sure to see him in the crowd.
#2 – Shahrukh Khan ($600 Million)
Khan has also appeared in many, many films that would make an American actor’s schedule look completely clear. Making private appearances at weddings/parties and owning/selling the rights to his most successful films are ways in which Khan is not only a good actor, but a great businessman.
#1 – Jerry Seinfeld ($820 Million)
Back in 2008, Jerry Seinfeld got Microsoft and Bill Gates to fork over $10 million just to appear in a few ads together. Even if you didn’t like “Bee Movie” or if you didn’t watch it at all (and a lot of you didn’t), he still made millions just from lending his voice. Seinfeld will continue to make money off his 1990’s sitcom, which is all a comedian can ask for in a lifetime. Despite not acting for quite some time, Jerry Seinfeld is the richest actor in the world by a wide margin.
